283. Yankee Doodle Never Went To Town
Lyrics by Arthur Freed
Music by Bernie Hanighen
rec date | type | # | discography | tk | rec time |
1935 | MT | 11 | Complete on Columbia v.1 | 11 | 2’44” |
Yankee Doodle never went to town
I just discovered the story was phony
Let me give you all the real low-down
He didn’t even own a pony
He was really very short and fat
While in the story so skinny and moany
And so hungry that he ate his hat
And called the felt macaroni
Underneath the chestnut tree
He and the blacksmith would sip that tea
Then he’d bring out his uniform down
That’s how he went to town
Yankee Doodle tried to leave one day
Took his belongings and mounted his saddle
But he never got it on his way
Cause he didn’t have a pony
And the fairy tale is phony
How could Yankee Doodle go to town?

Because I like you much too much
You have a way with you

Just why I like you very much

Don’t lose your head
Then lose your guy
You can’t lose a broken heartIf you ever break up
Then try to make up
It’s tough to make a brand new startTake a walk
Think it over
While strolling ‘neath the moon
Don’t say things in December
You’ll regret in JuneWare your remark
Before you speak
Or you may be sorry soon
Don’t be erratic
Be diplomatic
To keep your heart’s in tuneCruel harsh words
Often spoken
Will upset your applecart
So don’t lose your head
Then lose your guy
‘Cause you can’t lose a broken heart(Louis Armstrong)
Look, don’t lose your head
Then lose your gal
You can’t lose a broken heart, babyIf you ever break up
Then try to make up
It’s tough to make a brand new startTake a walk
Think it over
While strolling beneath the moon
Don’t say things in December
Hmm, baby, you’ll regret too soonWare your remark
Before you speak
Or you may be sorry soon, baby
Don’t be erratic
Be diplomatic
To keep your heart’s in tune, babyCruel harsh words

lyrics by Don Raye
music by Gene De Paul
rec date | type | # | discography | tk | rec time |
1958 | MT | 307 | Lady In Satin | 3 | 3’48” |
You don’t know what love is
Until you’ve learned the meaning of the blues
Until you’ve loved a love you’ve had to lose
You don’t know what love isYou don’t know how lips hurt
Until you’ve kissed and had to pay the cost
Until you’ve flipped your heart and you have lost
You don’t know what love isDo you know how lost a heart feels
The thought of reminiscing
And how lips that taste of tears
Lose their taste for kissingYou don’t know how hearts burn
For love that cannot live yet never dies
Until you’ve faced each dawn with sleepless eyes
You don’t know what love is(bridge)
You don’t know how hearts burn
For love that cannot live yet never dies
Until you’ve faced each dawn with sleepless eyes
You don’t know what love isWhat love is

And you linger like a haunting refrain
And I find you spinning ’round in my brain
Like the bubbles in a glass of champagneYou go to my head
Like a sip of sparkling Burgundy brew

Like the kicker in a julep or twoThe thrill of the thought
That you might give a thought
To my pleaCasts a spell over me
Still I say to myself
Get ahold of yourself
Can’t you see that it never can beYou go to my head with a smile
That makes my temperature rise
Like a summer with a thousand Julys
You intoxicate my soul with your eyesThough I’m certain that this heart of mine

A “mint julep” was a popular cocktail (collaboration of Jerry Meyer from NY; I also thank his accurate text revision).
The song was recorded in 1938 by Teddy Wilson with a vocal by Nan Wynn. The same year it was recorded by Billie Holiday.
290. You Gotta Show Me
Dudley Brooks (**)

You gotta show me
Just how much you care
You gotta show me

That longing look in my eyes
I just know it looks good to you
I feel it to the skyPlease get to know me
Then you’ll understand
Just how to show me
That you carePlease stop teasing baby (*)
Say that you can too
You gotta show me
Like I’m showing youYou gotta show me
Just how much you care
You gotta show me
Your love’s really thereYou can’t seem to see
That longing look in my eyes
I just know it looks good to you
I feel it to the skyPlease get to know me
Then you’ll understand
Just how to show me
That you carePlease stop teasing baby
Say that you can too
You gotta chill me
Chill me
Know me
Show me,
Baby, like I’m showing you
Notes |
- (*) In my original transcription, I wrote “Please stop cheesing me baby”. However, alerted by my reader Nigel Jackson, I did a second listening and it became clear she says “Please stop teasing me baby” instead. It is possible compare to “chill” in the next line “You gotta chill me baby”. Thank you, Nigel. (May 2016)
- (**) Hello again! I was going through some newspaper databases that mention Billie Holiday and apparently this song was written FOR Billie rather than by. Credited to Dudley Brooks, the song was eventually recorded by none other than Bing Crosby the following year in 1951 (comment by my reader Nigel Jackson – March 2021).
- >Alerted by this comment, I went after Crosby’s record and found it out in Discogs. There, the song is credit to Dudley Brooks & Nick Castle (image below). In my opinion, this makes sense as Dudley was actually in the BH’s band that day in 1950 as piano player (in my source, the record BH at Stratford ’57 the song is credit to Billie Holiday instead). Follows both images:
- In March 22, 2022 another reader, Keith A. Dames (damesdance@gmail.com) sent me a comprehensive list of all 18 songs credit to Billie Holiday as composer (plus 2 “mystery” ones). Among them, You Gotta Show Me. If you want to see the complete list, please go to “comments” in this site.
291. You Let Me Down (1935)
lyrics by Al Dubin
music by Harry Warren
rec date | type | # | discography | tk | rec time |
1935 | MT | 15 | Complete on Columbia v.1 | 15 | 2’53” |
You told me that I was like an angel
Told me I was fit to wear a crown
So that you could get a thrill
You put me on a pedestalAnd then you let me down, let me down
You told me that I’d be wearing diamonds
I would have the smartest car in town
Made me think that I’m the top
And then you let the ladder dropYou know you let me down, let me down
I walked upon a rainbow
I clung unto a star
You had me up in heaven
That’s why I had to fall so farI was even looking for a cottage
I was measured for a wedding gown
That’s how I got cynical
You put me on a pinnacle
And then you let me down, let me down
How you let me down

I never knew I’d feel a thrill
I couldn’t dream a dream until
You showed me the wayThe moment you found me
The shadows around me
Just disappeared from view
The world became rosy
Each corner so cozy
Darling, all because of youYou showed me the way
And if I’ve learned that love can be
A paradise for you and me
Here’s all I can say

Lyrics by Lorenz Hart
Music by Richard Rodgers

1959 | MT | 326 | Complete on Verve v.10 | 21 | 3’08” |
I’m a sentimental sap that’s all
What’s the use of trying not to fall
I have no will
You’ve made your kill
‘Cause you took advantage of meI’m just like an apple on a bough
And you’re gonna shake me down somehow
So what’s the use
You’ve cooked my goose
‘Cause you took advantage of meI’m so hot and bothered that I don’t know
My elbow from my ear
I suffer something awful each time you go
Much worse when you’re near
Here I am with all my bridges burned
Just a babe in arms where you are concerned
So lock the doors and call me yours
‘Cause you took advantage of me(bridge)
I’m just like an apple on a bough
And you’re gonna shake me down somehow
So what’s the use
You’ve cooked my goose
‘Cause you took advantage of meI’m so hot and bothered that I don’t know
My elbow from my ear
I suffer something awful each time you go
Much worse when you are near
Here I am with all my bridges burned
Just a babe in arms where you’re concerned

Louis Alter & Sidney Mitchell
rec date | type | # | discography | tk | rec time |
1952 | MT | 222 | Complete on Verve v.1 | 21 | 3’26” |
You turned the tables on me
And now I’m falling for you
You turned the tables on me
I can’t believe that it’s trueI always thought when you brought
The lovely present you bought
Why hadn’t you brought me more
But now if you’d come
I’d welcome anything
From the five and ten cent storeYou used to call me the top
You put me up on a throne
You let me fall with a drop
And now I’m out on my own
But after thinking it over and over
I got what was coming to me
Just like the sting of a bee
You turned the tables on me(bridge)
You used to call me the top
You put me up on a throne
You let me fall with a drop
And now I’m out on my own
But after thinking it over and over
I got what was coming to me
Just like the sting of a bee
You turned the tables on me

The song was introduced by Alice Faye in the musical film Sing, Baby, Sing. The most popular recording was by Helen Ward with the Benny Goodman orchestra (Wikipedia).
295. Your Mother’s Son-In-Law
Music by Alberta Nichols
Lyrics by Mann Holiner
rec date | type | # | discography | tk | rec time |
1933 | MT | 1 | Complete on Columbia v.1 | 1 | 2’43” |
You don’t have to have a hanker
To be a broker or a banker
No siree just simply be
My mother’s son-in-law
Needn’t even think of tryin’
To be a mighty social lion
Sipping tea if you’ll be
My mother’s son-in-law
Ain’t got the least desire
To set the world on fire
Just wish you’d make it proper
To call my old man papa
You don’t have to sing like Bledsoe
You can tell the world I said so
Can’t you see you’ve got to be
My mother’s son-in-law(bridge)
You don’t have to sing like Jessel
You can tell the world I said so
Can’t you see you’ve got to be
My mother’s son-in-law
Notes |
Comments on lyrics:

Diarmuid O’Hanlon from Dublin was kind enough to share his expertise in revising this lyrics. Many Thanks. He also point out that Mr. Dore is a reference to Dore Schary. You,
You’re driving me crazy!
What did I do?
What did I do
To you?
My tears for you
Make everything hazy
Clouding the skies
Of blueHow true
Were the friends who were near me
To cheer me
When I needed you
But you
Were the kind who would hurt me
Desert me
When I’m feeling blueYes, you
You’re driving me crazy!
What did I do?
What did I do
To you?How true
Were the friends who were near me
To cheer me
When I needed you
But you

“You’re Driving Me Crazy” is a U.S. popular song composed (music and lyrics) by Walter Donaldson for the 1930 musical comedy Smiles.
In 1931, cartoon character Betty Boop sang a sexy version of the song in the pre-code cartoon Silly Scandal. As Boop sang the song, her dress slipped down repeatedly, revealing a lacy bra and causing her to squeal. Later in the song, Betty was joined on stage by a line of mechanical dancing penguins who stomped out the beat in accompaniment to her singing. (Wikipedia)

You’re just a no account
You never will amount to nothin’ at all
When there is work to do and someone yells for you
You don’t hear them call
The Good Lord set aside his Sundays
For folks to rest
More that one day’s rest is wrong
You start restin’ Sunday and rest so hard
You’re tired the whole week long
You’re just a no account
You never will amount to nothin’ at allI just can’t figure how each time you milk the cow
The tit gets so small
We got machines to do your work for you
But you won’t press the button on the wall
You’re just a no account
You never will amount to nothin’ at all(bridge)

On the song, “You Gotta Show Me” the lyric “Please stop cheesin’, baby” is actually “Please stop teasin’, baby.”
I remember when I first posted the YouTube video of it, I put those lyrics but listening to it now, she’s clearly saying “teasin’.”
Dear Nigel
I listened to it one more time and you are fully right. I made already the corrections on the lyrics and gave you the proper credits. Thanks!
P.S. Actually ou gave me also the opportunity to fix a second error that I noticed: I mentioned the track in Complete in Columbia, instead of the correct Billie Holiday at Stratford ’57 CD. Thank again.
Hello again! I was going through some newspaper databases that mention Billie Holiday and apparently this song was written FOR Billie rather than by. Credited to Dudley Brooks, the song was eventually recorded by none other than Bing Crosby the following year in 1951.
Here’s a link to that video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZcN8GjIXPo
Hi, Nigel
The record “BH at Stratford” was my original source to credit it to Billie. It was a live presentation in the Oasis Bar in LA in 1950. After your comment I went to Discogs after Crosby’s record. This was a 45rpm (!) issued in 1951. There Dudley Brooks (and a fellow named Nick Castle) (?) are the ones credit to the song. So I went to my database and found that Dudley was actually in the band as piano player that day. I asumed you are right and made the correction, crediting you. Thanks.
