261. Weep No More
Music by Gordon Jenkins
Lyrics by Tom Adair
rec date | type | # | discography | tk | rec time |
1948 | MT | 196 | Complete on Decca v.2 | 4 | 3’19” |
(with The Stardusters choir)
I’m just about fed up
I’ve finally had my fill
Of sitting ’round and crying in my beer
I’ve drunk the bitter cup
I’ve downed the bitter pill
While waiting for the silver lining to appearI’m going to stack my blues up
On the very highest shelf
I’m going to pack my blues up
And get wise to myself(Weep no more, my baby)
(Weep no more, my baby)
Weep no more
I’m going to weep no more
I’m putting an end to this lonesome game
(It’s such a lonesome game this crying)Cry no tears,
I’m going to cry no tears
Each time that I happen to hear his name
(I hear his name)
I’m going out on the town
This hopeless torch I will drown
‘Cause I’m tired of running around
(Running around)
With just a memoryWeep no more,
I’m going to weep no more
‘Til somebody weeps
(Until somebody weeps)
For me
(I’m going to stack my blues up
on the very highest shell)
(I’m going to pack my blues up
and get wise to myself)Weep no more,
I’m going to weep no more
‘Til somebody weeps
For me
(Weep no more)

262. We’ll Be Together Again (1945)
Lyrics by Frankie Laine
Music by Carl Fischer
rec date | type | # | discography | tk | rec time |
1956 | MT | 285 | Complete on Verve v.7 | 13 | 4’24” |
No tears, no fears
Remember there’s always tomorrow
So what if we have to part
We’ll be together againYour kiss, your smile
Are memories I’ll treasure forever
So try thinking with your heart
We’ll be together againTimes when I know you’ll be lonesome
Times when I know you’ll be sad
Don’t let temptation surround you
Don’t let the blues make you badSome day, some way
We both have a lifetime before us
For parting is not good-bye
We’ll be together again(bridge)
Times when I know you’ll be lonesome
Times when I know you’ll be sad
Don’t let temptation surround you
Don’t let the blues make you badSome day, some way
We both have a lifetime before us
For parting is not good-bye
We’ll be together again

Fischer was Laine’s pianist and musical director when he composed the tune, and Laine was asked to write a lyric for it. The Pied Pipers were the first to release the song, and as well as Laine. (Wikipedia)

You’re in love
Your heart’s fluttering all day long
You only stutter cause your poor tongue

In 1934, Woods moved to London for three years where he worked for the British film studio Gaumont British, contributing material to several films, one of which was Road House (1934). The song was sung in the film by Violet Lorraine and included an introductory verse, not heard in the version later recorded by Billie Holiday, accompanied by Teddy Wilson & His Orchestra, on July 2, 1935. Peggy Lee covered it with a Nelson Riddle arrangement on her 1959 album Jump for Joy. (WIKIPEDIA)
I definitely don’t like this song, and there are 9 versions of it… But, from one of them in 1958 (LR 199) we also have the video, taken in the TV show “Art Ford’s Jazz Party” (N/A)
One of my readers, Douglas Gifford, a professional musician from Canada, made a nice comment about this song which I transcribe here:
What a delightful site you have here!!! Thank you! I arrived after a search for ‘who plays on “What a Little Moonlight Can Do” teddy wilson orchestra’ because the Wikipedia site has almost nothing to say about it.
I note you “I don’t appreciate this song …” and perhaps I can share its appeal to me. The song and this performance are strongly rooted in 20s pop and jazz and within Billie Holiday’s ouvre, it’s an outlier; pungent with Charleston and Black Bottom. But if you listen from the perspective of the times, that’s where all of them came from. And they swing *so* hard, all of them. The playing is brilliant and they are having a blast!! And they are completely blowing the cobwebs off the old style while they shout: we’re here!
And it makes me dance.

What a night
What a moon
What a boy
What a moon
What a night
What a boy
Those white clouds hang in the air
Like toy balloons
Say they just hang in the air
That’s made for honeymoons
What a hug
What a kiss
What a boy
What a game Oh, what bliss
What a boy
Is it a wonder
My heart is full of joy
What a night
What a moon
What a boy

What is this going to get us
Where are we headin’ in
When do we start to live dear
When do we really beginWhat is this going to get us
Hanging around till four
Saying goodnight at daybreak
Kissing goodbye in the doorwayWe can go on the way we’ve gone
I’m at the end of my rope
I can’t live on love I’ve so much of
And I can’t keep livin’ on hopeWhat is this going to get us
Only an aching heart
When is this going to get us
Together never to part(bridge)
We can go on the way we’ve gone
I’m at the end of my rope
Gee I can’t live on love I’ve so much of

When is this going to get us

What shall I say
When our neighbors want us to come to tea?
They don’t know you’re not with me
What shall I say?What shall I say
When the phone rings and someone asks for you
They don’t know I ask for you too
What shall I say?How can I hide the tears inside
How can I face the crowd?
I can make lips of mine be still
But my heart sighs too loudI could explain that
You’re gone for only a week to shop
But after the week is up
What shall I say?

lyrics by Johnny Burke
music by Bob Haggart
rec date | type | # | discography | tk | rec time |
1955 | MT | 267 | Complete on Verve v.5 | 19 | 4’16” |
What’s new?
How is the world treating you?
You haven’t changed a bit
Lovely as ever I must admitWhat’s new?
How did that romance come through?
We haven’t met since then
Gee, but it’s nice to see you againWhat’s new?
Probably I’m boring you
But seeing you is grand
And you were sweet to offer your handI understand.
Adieu!
Pardon my asking what’s new
Of course you couldn’t know
I haven’t changed I still love you so(bridge)
What’s new?
Probably I’m boring you
But seeing you is grand
And you were sweet to offer your handI understand.
Adieu!
Pardon my asking what’s new
Of course you couldn’t know
I haven’t changed I still love you so
Still love you so
What’s new?
Notes |
It was originally an instrumental tune titled “I’m Free” by Haggart in 1938. The following year, the music publishers hired Johnny Burke to write lyrics for the tune. Burke’s telling of the torch song is unique, using one side of a casual conversation between former lovers. Thus the song was retitled using the song’s first line, “What’s New?” The song was recorded with the new title in 1939 by Bob Crosby And His Orchestra With Vocalist Teddy Grace. The song reached a peak chart position of #10.

Doing what he can
But what does she care
When a woman loves a manShe’ll just string along
All through thick and thin
Till his ship comes in
It’s always that way
When a woman love a manShe’ll be the first one to praise him
When he’s goin’ strong
The last one to blame him
When everything’s wrong
It’s such a one-sided game that they play
But women are funny that wayTell her she’s a fool
She’ll say yes I know
But I love him so
And that’s how it goes
When a woman loves a man(bridge)
Tell her she’s a fool
She’ll say yes I know

Homesick, tired, all alone in a big city
Why should everybody pity me
Nighttimes falling and I’m yearning for Virginia
Hospitality within it calls mePale moon shining on the fields below
Folks are crooning songs soft and low
They needn’t tell me so
Because I know it’s sleepy time down southSoft winds blowing through the pinewood trees
Folks down there live a life of ease
When old mammy falls upon her knees
It’s sleepy time down southSteamboats on the river a-coming, a-going
Splashing the night away
Hear those banjos ringing
The folks who are all singing
They dance till the break of day, sayDear old Southland with its dreamy songs
Take me back there where I belong
Oh, how I love to be in mammy’s arms
When it’s sleepy time down south(bridge)
Dear old Southland with its dreamy songs
Take me back there where I belong
Oh, how I love to be in mammy’s arms

Magic moonlight dies
At break of dawn
There is no sunrise
When your lover has goneWhat lonely hours
The evening shadows bring
What lonely hours
With memories lingering
Like faded flowers
Life can’t mean anything
When your lover has goneWhen you’re alone
Who cares for starlit skies
When you’re alone
The magic moonlight dies
At break of dawn
There is no sunrise
When your lover has goneWhat lonely hours
The evening shadows bring
What lonely hours

When your lover,
When your lover has gone(applauses)

1937 | MT | 52 | Complete on Columbia v.3 | 4 | 2’46” |
Where is the sun
Oh clouds above me
Where are the birds that used to sing?
Everything’s wrong
Oh where is their song of love?Where is the one
Who said he loved me
Gone like the flowers he used to bring
Can it be true there’s somebody new to love?Listen my heart
Don’t feel so bad
Think of the kisses we knew
You know my heart
The moments we had
Maybe he’s missing them tooWhere is the sun?
Oh clouds above me
Don’t take the dreams to which I cling
Where is the sun?
Oh where is the one I love?(bridge)

Lyrics by Gus Kahn
Music by Franz Waxman
rec date | type | # | discography | tk | rec time |
1937 | MT | 68 | Complete on Columbia v.3 | 20 | 2’33” |
Who wants love?
Love is a joy we borrow
Pay back in tears tomorrow
So who wants love?Who wants love?
Something to fill your heart with
So very soon to part with
So who wants love?Love is a dream of weaving
Moonbeams in patterns rare
Love is a child believing
Stories of castles in the airSo who wants love?
I’ll go away without it
I know too much about it
Who wants love?(bridge)
Love is a dream of weaving
Moonbeams in patterns rare
Love is a child believing
Stories of castles in the airSo who wants love?
I’ll go away without it
I know too much about it
Who wants love?Who wants love?

Why did I always depend on you
When I knew that you’d end
In another’s arms?
As a rule I’m no fool
But it seems where love’s concerned
There’s no rule for a fool
Who would let his heart be burnedAnd you intended to fool me too
That’s no lie
And you can’t deny it’s true
From the start in my heart
I knew what you’d do
Why did I depend on you?(bridge)
And you intended to fool me too
That’s no lie
And you can’t deny it’s true
From the start in my heart
I knew what you’d do

1937 | MT | 43 | Complete on Columbia v.2 | 18 | 2’49” |
Why was I born?
Why am I livin’?
What do I get?
What am I givin’?
Why do I want for things
That dare not hope for?
What can I hope for?
I wish I knew
Why do I try
To draw you near me?
Why do I cry?
You never hear me
I’m a poor fool
But what can I do?
Oh baby why was I born
To love you?

Willow weep for me,
Willow weep for me
Bend your branches down
Along the ground and cover me
Listen to my plea
Hear me willow and
Weep for meGone my lovely dreams
Lovely summer dreams
Gone and left me here
To weep my tears along the stream
Sad as I can be
Hear me willow and
Weep for meWhisper to the wind
And say that love has sinned
To leave my heart a sign
And crying alone
Murmur to the night
And hide her starry light
So none will find me sighing
Crying all aloneWeeping willow tree
Weep in sympathy
Bend your branches down
Along the ground and cover me
Listen to me plea
Hear me willow and
Weep for meWhisper to the wind

One account of the inspiration for the song is that, during her time at Radcliffe College, Ronell “had been struck by the loveliness of the willow trees on campus, and this simple observation became the subject of an intricate song”.

With thee I swing baby
With thee it’s just not dancin’
With thee I cling, baby
Whenever I get a chanceWith thee I swing, baby
For thou art so entrancin’
My heart goes bing baby
Whenever we start to danceWith all the others
I’m only marking time
But in your arms I melt away
Like ice cream on a summer’s day
Just one more thing, baby
My life won’t he worthwhile
Till down the middle aisle
With thee I swing, baby

My life holds nothing in store
Without your loveI’ve rode the crest of a wave
With you beside me
Now who’s to guide me
Because I’m lost at seaWithout your love
I’m like a plane without wings
