Billie Holiday

1940 | MT | 134 | Complete in Columbia v.6 | 14 | 3’08” |
Tell me more and more and then some
You know what I long to hear
I want more and more and then some
Of that I Love You Only DearTell me more and more and then some
The way that you feel and then
When you’ve told that old sweet story
And you’re through, start right in again
I’ve made that old mistake
Know the awful ache
Of a heart that’s double crossed
The waitin’s been so long
It’s hard to be believing
If I’ve missed my guess, happiness is lostTell me more and more and then some
You know how I love that stuff
Whisper on from now ’til Doomsday
But I never will hear enough(bridge)
I’ve made that old mistake
Know the awful ache
Of a heart that’s double crossed
The waitin’s been so long
It’s hard to be believing
If miss my guess happiness is lostTell me more and more and then some

Lyrics by Jack Lawrence
Music by Walter Gross
rec date | type | # | discography | tk | rec time |
1952 | MT | 230 | Complete on Verve v.2 | 4 | 3’23” |
The evening breeze
Caressed the trees,
Tenderly
The trembling trees
Embraced the breeze
Tenderly
Then you and I
Came wandering by
And lost in a sigh
Were weThe shore was kissed
By sea and mist
Tenderly
I can’t forget
How two hearts met
BreathlesslyYour arms opened wide
And closed me inside
You took my lips
You took my love
So tenderlyThen you and I
Came wandering by
And lost in a sigh
Were weThe shore was kissed
By sea and mist
Tenderly
I can’t forget
How two hearts met
BreathlesslyYour arms opened wide
And closed me inside
You took my lips
You took my love
So tenderly

BH: “Well, I’m gonna try do the recording made for Norman Granz, Mercury. Tenderly”)
The evening breeze
Caressed the trees
Tenderly
The shimmering trees
Embraced the breeze
Tenderly
Then you and I
Came wandering by
Lost in a sigh
Were weI can’t forget
How two hearts met
Tenderly
The sky was kissed
By sea and mist
BreathlesslyYour arms opened wide
And closed me inside
You took my lips
You took my love
So tenderly
Notes |
Sarah Vaughan recorded the song in 1946 and had a US pop hit with it. Since then, “Tenderly” has been recorded by many artists, but perhaps the best-known version was by Rosemary Clooney. (Wikipedia).
Billie’s rendering in MT 230 (1952) is also superb.

1944 | MT | 177 | Complete on Decca v.1 | 4 | 2’52” |
It’s that old devil called love again
Gets behind me and keeps giving me the shove again
Putting rain in my eyes, tears in my dreams
And rocks in my heartIt’s that sly old son of a gun again
He keeps telling me that I’m the lucky one again
But I still have that rain still have those tears
And those rocks in my heartSuppose I didn’t stay ran away wouldn’t play
That devil – what a potion he would brew
He’d follow me around build me up, tear me down
Till I’d be so bewildered I wouldn’t know what to doMight as well give up the fight again
I know darn well he’ll convince me that he’s right again
When he sings that siren song I just gotta tag along
With that old devil called loveHe’d follow me around build me up, tear me down
Till I’d be so bewildered I wouldn’t know what to doMight as well give up the fight again

You’ve heard my story before
I’ve often told it you know
Well it’s just the same
A dream that’s been in vainSomeone to miss when I’m away
Someone to kiss at close of day
A heart that’s new
With a love that’s true
That’s all I ask of youSomeone to care when things look blue
A love to share my whole life through
We’re side by side
Just a groom and a bride
That’s all I ask of youNow most of my plans have crumbled and faded
May this one come true
I’ll make a start
I’ll give you my heart
The rest is up to youSo give your love
In one sweet kiss
I ask no more of you than this
Be sweet and kind
Say that you’ll be mine
That’s all I ask of you(bridge)

What’s in store for me
Your love could open
Heaven’s door to me
But you don’t care a straw for me
That’s life I guessMy days and nights
Are starting off with you
My sugar kisses taste like salt to you
But why should I find fault with you
That’s life I guess. The world was bright when you loved me
Sweet was the touch of your lips
The world went dark when you left me
And then there came a total eclipseNobody knows how cruel fate can be
How close together love and hate can be
Goodbye just clean the slate for me

Lyrics by Eddie DeLange
Music by Louis Alter
rec date | type | # | discography | tk | rec time |
1946 | LR | 37 | Perfect Complete Collection v.2 | 8 | 3’45” |
When the moon’s kind of dreamy
Starry eyed and dreamy
And nights are luscious and long
If you’re kind of lonely
And all by your only
Then nothin’ but the blues are brewin’
The blues are brewin’When the wind through the willow
Blows across your pillow
And tells you sleepin’ is wrong
If love goes a thirsting
Till you feel like bursting
Then nothing but the blues are brewin’
The blues are brewin’Suppose you want somebody
But you ain’t got nobody
You only get a gleam in your eye
Till somebody’s found you
And puts their lovin’ arms around you
You got the feelin’ you want to dieBut when the Lord up above you
Sends someone to love you
The blues are something you loose
You’re so busy doing
The things that you’re doing
That love ain’t got no time
For brewin’ the blues

So I walk a little too fast
And I drive a little too fast
And I’m reckless it’s true
But what else can you do
At the end of a love affairSo I talk a little too much
And I laugh a little too much
And my voice is too loud
When I’m out in a crowd
So that people are apt to stareDo they know do they care
That it’s only
That I’m lonely
And low as can be
And the smile on my face
Isn’t really a smile at allSo I smoke a little too much
And I joke a little too much
And the tunes I request
Are not always the best
But the ones
Where the trumpets blareSo I go at a maddening pace
And I pretend
That it’s taking his place
But what else can you do
At the end of a love affair(bridge)
Do they know do they care

1939 | MT | 126 | Complete in Columbia v.6 | 6 | 3’04” |
Someday he’ll come along
The man I love
And he’ll be big and strong
The man I love
And when he comes my way
I’ll do my best to make him stayHe’ll look at me and smile
I’ll understand
Then in a little while
He’ll take my hand
And though it seems absurd
I know we both won’t say a wordMaybe I shall meet him Sunday
Maybe Monday maybe not
Still I’m sure to meet him one day
Maybe Tuesday will be my good news dayHe’ll build a little home
That’s meant for two
From which I’ll never roam
Who would, would you
And so all else above
I’m dreaming of the man I love(bridge)
Maybe I shall meet him Sunday

Originally part of the 1924 score for the Gershwin government satire Lady, Be Good as “The Girl I Love”, the song was deleted from the show. As with many standards of the era, it has become more famous as an independent popular song than as one from a Broadway musical. (Wikipedia)

Never dared to have your arms around me
Not that I considered it a sin
But tonight I want your arms around me
It’s the mood that I’m inCan it be the music that they’re playin’
Or the magic of the violin
That intrigues my heart to obeyin’
It’s the mood that I’m inMaybe it’s the cocktail that I’m sippin’
That helps to put me in this frame of mine
Maybe it’s because of you I’m sleepin’
Tonight I’m so romantically inclinedSo speak to me of love in words so tender
Let the rhapsody of life begin
I could give my heart in sweet surrender
It’s the mood that I’m in

The very thought of you
And I forget to do
Those little ordinary things
That everyone ought to do
I’m livin’ in a kind of a daydream
I’m happy as a queen
And foolish though it may seem
To me that’s everythingThe mere idea of you
The longing here for you
You’ll never know
How slow the moments go
Till I’m near to you
I see your face in every flower
Your eyes in stars above
It’s just the thought of you
The very thought of you my love(bridge)
I see your face in every flower
Your eyes in stars above
It’s just the thought of you
The very thought of you my love

I fell in love with you the first time I looked into
Them there eyes
You have a certain little cute way of flirting with
Them there eyes
They make me feel so happy
They make me feel so blue
I’m falling
No stalling
Fallin’ in a great big way for youMy heart is jumpin’
You started something with
Them there eyes
You better look out little brown eyes if you’re wise
They sparkle
They bubble
Get you in a lot of trouble
Ah, baby
Them there eyes(bridge)
I fell in love with you the first time I looked into
Them there eyes
You have a certain way of flirting with

Fallin’ in a great big way for youMy heart is jumpin’

You better watch out little brown eyes if you’re wise
Sparkle
Bubble
Get you in a lot of trouble
Ah, Mister

I fell in love with you the first time I looked into
Them there eyes
You have a certain little cute way of flirting with
Them there eyes
They make me feel so happy
They make me feel so blue
I’m falling
No stalling
In a great big way for youMy heart is jumpin’
You started something with
Them there eyes
You better look out little brown eyes if you’re wise
They sparkle
They bubble
Get you in a lot of trouble
Ah, baby

“There Is No Greater Love” is a 1936 jazz standard composed by Isham Jones, with lyrics by Marty Symes. It was the last hit song for Jones’s orchestra before the bandleader turned the orchestra over to Woody Herman, beginning the latter’s 50 year career as a bandleader. (Wikipedia)

For there’s a change in the weather
There’s a change in the sea
From now on there’ll be in change in me
My walk will be different my talk and my name
Nothing about me is going to be the sameI’m going to change my way of living
If that ain’t enough
Then I’ll change the way that I strut my stuff
Nobody wants you when you’re old and gray
There’ll be some changes made – today
There’ll be some changes made(bridge)
For there’s a change in the fashions
Ask just feminine folks
Even Sinatra has been changing his jokes
I must make some changes from the old to the new
I must do things just the same as others doI’m going to change my long tall daddy for a little short fat
Going to change the number where I’m living at
I must have some loving or I’ll fade away
There’ll be some changes made – right away
There’ll be some changes made

A cigarette that bears a lipstick’s traces
An airline ticket to romantic places
Still my heart has wings
These foolish things remind me of youA tinkling piano in the next apartment
Those stumbling words
That told you what my heart meant
A fairground’s painted swings
These foolish things remind me of you.You came you saw
You conquered me
When you did that to me
I knew somehow this had to beThe winds of March
That make my heart a dancer
A telephone that rings

To find you still
These things are dear to me
They seem to bring you near to me
The scent of smoldering leaves
The wail of steamers
Two lovers on the street
Who walk like dreamers
Oh, how the ghost of you clings
These foolish things
Remind me of you
Notes |
The lyrics works through the various things that remind the singer of a lost love. The lyrics were written by Maschwitz during the course of one Sunday morning at his flat in London. Within hours of crafting the lyrics, he dictated them over the phone to Jack Strachey and they arranged to meet the same evening to discuss the next step. Strachey suggested an alternative title, These Little Things, but this was not taken up. (Wikipedia)
This is one of my favourite songs. Billie’s rendering in the 1952 version is unforgettable (N/A), listen:

And that’s the moon above
And those are eyes that say you’re mine
Why can’t we combine these ‘n’ that ‘n’ those
These are moments rare
And that’s the comfy chair
And those are lips that should be kissed
How can we resist these ‘n’ that ‘n’ those
Holding conversation is no recreation
And we have so much more to do
I’d be disrespectful
If I were neglectful
Of all that nature gave to you
These two hearts are bold
And that’s a hand to hold
And those two arms have room to spare
Where we both can share these ‘n’ that ‘n’ those

Notes |
The song is performed by Astaire on the foggy deck of the ferry from New Jersey to Manhattan. It is sung to Ginger Rogers, who remains silent listening throughout. No dance sequence follows, which was unusual for the Astaire-Rogers numbers. Astaire and Rogers did dance to it later in their last movie The Barkleys of Broadway (1949) in which they played a married couple with marital issues. The song, in the context of Shall We Dance, notes some of the things that Peter (Astaire) will miss about Linda (Rogers). The basic meaning of the song is that even if the lovers part, though physically separated the memories cannot be forced from them. Thus it is a song of mixed joy and sadness. (Wikipedia)

Things are looking up
I’ve been looking the landscape over
And it’s covered with four leaf clover
Oh things are looking up
Since love looked up at meBitter was my cup
But no more will I be the mourner
For I’ve certainly turned the corner
Oh things are looking up
Since love looked up at meSee the sunbeams
Every one beams
Just because of you
Love’s in session
And my depression
Is unmistakably throughThings are looking up
It’s a great little world we live in
Oh, I’m happy as a pup
Since love looked up at me

I want to seek it if it’s yes or no

It’s me who’ll speak it
‘Cause the lord, he knows
That this is heaven to me
If you’ve got your hands
And got your feet
To plow your land
And cut your wheat
You raise your head
When night is done
Shout your thanks up to the sun
So when I hear them say

There’s better living Let them go their way

You’re just too marvelous
Too marvelous for words
Like glorious glamorous
And that old standby amorousIt’s all so wonderful
I’ll never find the words
That say enough tell enough
I mean just aren’t swell enoughYou’re much too much
You’re just too very, very
To ever be in Webster’s Dictionary
And so I’m borrowing
A love song from the birds
To tell you that you’re marvelous
Too marvelous to wordsYou’re just too marvelous
Too marvelous for words
Like glorious glamorous
And that old standby amorousIt’s all so wonderful
I’ll never find the words
That say enough tell enough
I mean they just aren’t swell enoughYou’re much too much

I’m so weary and all alone
Feel tired like heavy stone
Trav’lin’, trav’lin’ all alone
Who will see and who will care
Bout this load that I must bear
Trav’lin’, trav’lin’ all alone
Prayers are said to heaven above
‘Bout my burdens woes and love
Head bowed down with misery
Nothing now appeals to me
Trav’lin’, trav’lin’ all alone(bridge)
Give me just another day
There’s one thing I want to say
Friends are well when all is gold
Leave you always when you’re old
Trav’lin’, trav’lin’ all alone

I’m trav’lin’ light
Because my man has gone
And from now on
I’m trav’lin’ light
He said goodbye
And took my heart away
So from today
I’m trav’lin’ lightNo one to see
I’m free as the breeze
No one but me
And my memories
Some lucky night
He may come back again
But until then
I’m trav’lin’ light

257. Twenty-Four Hours A Day (1935)
lyrics by Arthur Swanstrom
music by James Frederick Hanley
rec date | type | # | discography | tk | rec time |
1935 | MT | 10 | Complete on Columbia v.1 | 10 | 3’01” |
Like a little old fashioned music box
With just one tune to play
My heart keeps singin’ I love you
Twenty four hours a day
Like a little old fashioned music box
That skips a note or two
My heart keeps missin’ a heart beat
Singin’ its song about you
And although the song we know is old
It’s still the sweetest story ever told
Like a little old fashioned music box
With just one tune to play
My heart keeps singin’ I love you
Twenty four hours a day

I have always loved Billie Holiday songs.
I know I was not from that era, but I particularly love the music, such as:
They Cannot Take That Away From Me.
The Nearness Of You.
How You Look Tonight.
There will never be music like that again and wish I had a copy of them!
I grew up in the 1960’s, but my parents frequently played records of many beautiful sons and eras. I am so glad that I got to experience them!
Dear Dulce,
I am also not from that era, but also got addicted to Billie. You can hear most of the songs in the site. Enjoy.
