Well good morning baby
Welcome back to town
How do fine Papa
Welcome back to town
You’re doing so much traveling
Never know when you’ll be aroundYou’re a fine and mellow fellow
But you’re stubborn as a mule
You love me like an angel
But you treat me like a foolTwo-faced Daddy
Don’t hand me no double-cross
You’ll see any time I’m ready
I can tell you baby get lostYou’re cheating on the outside
Doing anything you choose
You better come back on the inside
‘Cause you got too much to loseDon’t want no trouble
I’ve got to be the boss
And if you can’t play it my way
Well now baby get lostI try to stop your cheating
But I just don’t have the time
‘Cause I got so many men that
They’re standing right in lineKeep cool Papa
You got to come across
‘Cause any time I’m ready
Yes any time I’m ready
You know when I’m ready
I can tell you baby get lostWhy don’t you get lost

Morton Krouse
Follows 2 versions of the lyrics
rec date | type | # | discography | tk | rec time |
1946 | MT | 188 | Complete on Decca v.1 | 18 | 3’10” |
Had my lunch all alone
Waited for you to phone
Said you’d call me at two
So about twenty of three
I had cocktails with Lee
Baby, I don’t cry over youStood me up in the rain
Tried to hurt me again
Bet you thought I’d be blue
I went out to a show
With a swell guy named Joe
Baby, I don’t cry over youThese foolish games you keep playing
Might work with somebody else
But I could have told you
Right from the start
No man is man enough
To break my heartIf you don’t come tonight
Think you’ll give me a fright
Tell you what I will do
I’ll put on my best gown
And go painting this town
Baby, I don’t cry over you(bridge)
These foolish games you keep playing
Might work with somebody else
But I could have told you
Right from the start
No man is man enough
To break my heartIf you don’t come tonight
Think you’ll give me a fright
Tell you what I will do
I’ll put on my best gown
And go painting this town
Baby, I don’t cry over youListen Jack your sweet Jill
Will be out with some Bill
Maybe I don’t cry over you

Yes, helpless without you baby
I’ve almost lost my mind
I’m blue and confused
Since you left me behind
My friends all know it baby
The tears I cannot hide
My friends all know it baby
The tears I cannot hide
You’ve changed your disposition
And thrown my love aside
Be fair with me baby
Our love can start anew
Please be fair with me baby
Our love can start anew
I’m blue and helpless baby
And I’m worried over you
Yes, I’m worried
I’ve got the helpless blues

Notes |
Quite an unusual song: Decca made 4 different recordings, in 4 different dates with 4 different bands. The only one generally marked as MT is the fourth (actually, the best of them all). In this work, however, I considered all four as MTs: they are actually almost completely independent recordings.
The song was composed for Fancy Free (1944), the first Bernstein’s foray into the world of the ballet, and it immediately became extremely popular (Wikipedia).

I love my man tell the world I do

Makes me feel so blueMy man wouldn’t give me no breakfast

I love my man I’m liar if I say I don’t
But I’ll quit my man
I’m liar if I say I won’tI’ve been your slave baby
Ever since I’ve been your babe
I’ve been your slave
Ever since I’ve been your babe
But before I’ll be your dog
I’ll see you in your graveMy man wouldn’t give me no breakfast
Wouldn’t give me no dinner
Squawked about my supper then he put me outdoors
Had the nerve to lay a matchbox on my clothes
I didn’t have so many
But I have a long, long ways to goI ain’t good-looking
And my hair ain’t curls
I ain’t good-looking
And my hair ain’t curls
But my mother she give me something
It’s going to carry me through this worldSome men like me ’cause I’m happy
Some ’cause I’m snappy
Some call me honey
Others think I’ve got moneySome tell me Billie,
Baby you’re built for speed
Now, if you put that all together
Makes me everything a good man needs

According to the article in Melody Maker, 1 August 1936:
“Billie Holiday has her first solo recording at Brunswick last week… Bernie Hanighen,…suggested making a blues, so the blues it was”. This blues was Billie’s Blues.
This is a song by Billie Holiday, that she wrote on the spot just before the session. She recorded it twice in studio, for Columbia and Commodore. It was a frequent number in her live shows, though. A wonderful song. Out of the almost twenty versions, one has fortunately been recorded, the live TV presentation for ABC in Los Angeles in 1956 (LR152), where she sings three songs (N/A). Follows the complete video (12’52”).

Without a dream in my heart

You heard me saying a prayer for
Someone I really could care forAnd then there suddenly appeared before me
The only one my arms will ever hold
I heard somebody whisper – please adore me
And when I looked
The moon had turned to goldBlue moon
Now I’m no longer alone

My, how I miss
Your tender kiss
And the wonderful things you would doI run my hands
Through silvery strands
‘Cause I’m blue turning grey over you.You used to be
So good to me
That’s when I was a noveltyNow you have new thrills in view
Found someone new
Left me blue turning grey over youYou used to be
So good to me
That’s when I was a noveltyNow you have new thrills in view
Found someone new
Left me blue turning grey over youYes, I’m blue turning grey over you

My days have grown so lonely
For you I cry
For you dear only
Why haven’t you seen it
I’m all for you body and soulI spend my days in longing
I’m wondering why it’s me you’re wronging
Oh tell you I mean it
I’m all for you body and soulI can’t believe it
It’s hard to conceive it
That you’d throw away romance
Are you pretending
It looks like the ending
Unless I can have one more chance to prove dearMy life a hell you’re making
You know I’m yours for just the taking
I’d gladly surrender
Myself to you body and soul(bridge)
What lies before me
A future that’s stormy
A winter that’s gray and cold
Unless there’s magic the end will be tragic
And echo a tale that’s been told so oftenMy life revolves about you
What earthly good am I without you
I tell you I mean it
I’m all for you body and soul

There’s something rules our destiny
Right from the first day of our birth
Although you may not care for me
You have your mission on this earth
You were born to love
Sure as you live
Born with everything heaven could give
You have eyes and they express
Love at a glance
You have lips whose tenderness
Speak of romanceLike a dream of love, lovely to see
You’re the angel of my destiny
And to think that you have found
Your place on earth only to be
Born to love and be loved by me(bridge)
Like a dream of love, lovely to see
You’re the angel of my destiny
And to think that you have found
Your place on earth only to be
Born to love and be loved by me

Love is funny or it’s sad
It’s quiet or it’s mad
It’s a good thing or it’s bad
But beautifulBeautiful
To take a chance
And if you fall, you fall
And I’m thinking
I wouldn’t mind at allLove is tearful or it’s gay
It’s a problem or it’s play
It’s a heartache anyway
But beautifulAnd I’m thinking
If you were mine
I’d never let you go
And that would be
But beautiful
I know(long bridge)
Love is tearful or it’s gay
It’s a problem or it’s play
It’s a heartache anyway
But beautifulAnd I’m thinking
If you were mine
I’d never let you go
And that would be
But beautiful

They’re writing songs of love
But not for me
A lucky star’s above
But not for me
With love to lead the way
I’ve found more clouds of gray
Than any Russian play
Could guarantee
I was a fool to fall
And get that way
Heigh-ho! Alas! and all
So lack-a-day
Although I can’t dismiss
The memory of his kiss
I guess he’s not for me(bridge)
He’s knocking on a door
But not for me
He’ll plan a two by four
But not for me
I know that love’s a game
I’m puzzled just the same
Was I the moth or flame
I’m all at sea
It all began so well
But what an end
This is the time a feller
Needs a friend
When every happy plot
Ends with the marriage knot
And there’s no knot for me

It was written for Gershwins musical Girl Crazy (1930) and introduced in the original production by Ginger Rogers (picture below). Source Wikipedia. Judy Garland sang it in the 1943 film version of Girl Crazy.
