Away from the city that hurts and mocks
I’m standing alone by the desolate docks
In the still and the chill of the night

I see the horizon the great unknown
My heart has an ache it’s as heavy as stone
Will the dawn coming on make it light?

I cover the waterfront
I’m watching the sea
Will the one I love
Be coming back to me?

I cover the waterfront
In search of my love
And I’m covered
By a starlit sky above

Here am I
Patiently waiting
Hoping and longing
Oh how I yearn
Where are you
Are you forgetting
Do you remember
Will you return

I cover the waterfront
I’m watching the sea
For the one I love
Must soon come back to me

(very short bridge)

For the one I love
Must soon come back to me

Notes

The song was inspired by Max Miller’s 1932 best-selling novel I Cover the Waterfront. The song became instantly popular, and many artists covered it. A 1933 motion picture, also inspired by Miller’s book and also titled I Cover the Waterfront, was re-scored at the last minute to include the tune. Sheet music publishers later used the film’s success by claiming that the song was “inspired by the United Artist Picture of the same name” (Wikipedia).

I can’t pretend
I’m sorry we’re apart
I can’t pretend
I just can’t fool my heart
Though I make mine
My friends all seem to realize
Their smiles, that look in my eye
I can’t pretend
I simply can’t be gayer
For in the end
My tears give me away
Without you dear
I live a lie
I can’t defend
I love you
And I can’t pretend

I’ve been around the world in a plane
Settled revolutions in Spain
The North Pole I have charted
But can’t get started with you

And at the golf course I’m under par
Metro-Goldwyn wants me to star
I’ve got a house and a show place
But can’t get no place with you

You’re so supreme
Lyrics I write of you
Dream, dream day and night of you
Scheme, just for the sight of you
But what good will it do?

I’ve been consulted by Franklin D
Even Gable had me to tea
But now I’m brokenhearted
Can’t get started with you

Breeze
Stop moaning’ those weird melodies
My man has left me and I can’t face the music
Without singing’ the blues
Rain
Your rhythm on my window pane
Drives me insane because I can’t face the music
Without singing’ the blues

My heart is so broken
I’ve spoken
To the Lord for sympathy
And if He don’t help me
So help me
It’s the bottom of the deep blue sea
For me
I’m gonna end this misery
My man has left me and I can’t face the music
Without singing the blues

My heart is so broken
I’ve spoken
To the Lord for sympathy
And if He don’t help me
So help me
It’s the bottom of the deep blue sea
For me
I’m gonna end this misery
My man has left me and I can’t face the music
Without singing the blues

I can’t face the music
